Insurance Obstacles

I really don’t know much about insurance. I am a web guy mainly and my focus is family and work. Dena had set us up with insurance via the marketplace. All good!

Nope, not good enough. The company I work for AccuLock, Inc. offers insurance to all of us employees, but I have always declined it because we already had it and I wanted to make as much as possible on that paycheck! The opt-in time each year for company insurance is June of every year and like all of the previous 3 years we declined and kept moving on. Once we got the news about Dena and were told what to do from a medical standpoint we immediately called MD Anderson to get everything rolling.

Who is your insurance provider?” Blue Cross of Texas! “Is that an HMO?” Yes!

Well, we do not accept that insurance and in order to get you in the system and appointments set you will need to pay cash. (16k)

I immediately contacted our HR department at AccuLock to see if we could get into the company Blue Cross (PPO) but we had missed the deadline by about a week. Knowing this, we were getting a bit worried and not sure what to do. Friends pointed us towards people they know who sell insurance but we kept getting told no we do not accept that. Thankfully, one of the agents we spoke to asked Dena a few questions about her employment. Dena is self employed and I do lots of work for company Mustard Seed Soap Co‘s web and the agent asked

Do you have an LLC or INC?” Dena replied, Yes.

She said, we can get you set up with company insurance through your business!

No other options, so we said lets do it.

The monthly for the insurance is $3,000.

Remember, we are not going to regret anything in the future.

Not really knowing how we would pay for it, praying and trusting that God would provide a way we set it up and got going with MD Anderson. This took a few weeks though and was difficult mentally as days went by like Hershey’s chocolate coming out of a cold refrigerated bottle!

A life long friend of mine Dave Davidson who I also played in a band with back when we were in our 20’s told me, “Ken, you need to set up a GO FUND ME account to help you guys get going!

Dave has had his own medical issues to deal with over the past 18 years as he had a terrible diving accident (2006) paralyzing him from the neck down.

I have never been one to ask for things like this and I told Dave that but he insisted saying “Ken, people like to help when help is needed.” I talked to Dena and we decided to go for it. Thanks for the encouragement Dave!

The main goal is to have the money available to pay that big monthly insurance premium on top of our current monthly situation that we all work for! I trusted in God that the GO FUND ME would provide what was needed because Dena has been touched by so many good people including our church families and friendships with the best families in our area from moving her soap business from our home to downtown Crockett about 1.5 years ago.  Not to mention friends of mine I have had since I was a kid and our families.

Well, we are startled at the outcome since we started that from our friends and people we don’t even know. We appreciate every donation so much and it is and will continue to relieve that extra financial burden associated with this new journey!
